The story

Ana Josefa Pérez Florido was born in 1845 in the valley of Abdalajís, near Málaga, Spain, the youngest of nineteen children. Her mother died when she was three, and her grandmother raised the family. She devoted herself to old people who had been left with no one to care for them. On December 25, 1880 the Bishop of Málaga approved the community she had gathered. It became the Mothers of the Abandoned and of St Joseph of the Mountain, and she took the name Petra of St Joseph. She died in Barcelona in 1906. John Paul II beatified her in 1994.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Ana Petra Pérez Florido was beatified in 1994.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
