The story

Carl Lampert was born in 1894 in Göfis, in Austria's Vorarlberg. He was ordained in 1918, studied church law in Rome and by 1939 was the second-ranking church official for the Innsbruck–Feldkirch region.

He protested openly against Nazi interference in church life and stood up for persecuted priests. He was arrested several times and held in the Dachau and Sachsenhausen concentration camps. Released in 1941 but banned from the Tyrol, he worked as a chaplain in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland), where a Gestapo informer posing as a fellow engineer reported on him.

Arrested again in 1943, he was condemned to death with two other priests and beheaded at Halle on November 13, 1944. He was beatified in Dornbirn in 2011.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Carl Lampert was beatified in 2011.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
