The story

Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz was born in Susa, Piedmont, in 1830, the sixth of seven children of a well-off family. He was ordained in 1854.

As a canon of Susa cathedral he cared especially for the poor, and through St John Bosco and others in Turin he learned how to organise charitable work. To help poor girls he founded the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Susa. In 1877 he became Bishop of Susa and for twenty-five years visited even the remotest mountain parishes, often on foot. He died in 1903. John Paul II beatified him in Susa in 1991.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz was beatified in 1991.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
