The story

Émilie d'Oultremont was born in 1818 into a Belgian noble family near Liège. She married Baron Victor van der Linden d'Hooghvorst and had four children. She was widowed in 1847.

While still raising her children she founded the Society of Mary Reparatrix in 1857, with the help of the Jesuits. The congregation is dedicated to prayer and to making amends for sin, and runs retreats and missions. As Mother Mary of Jesus she led it through serious internal difficulties, while worrying about her children. She died in Florence in 1879, on her way home to Belgium, and was beatified in 1997.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Émilie d'Oultremont was beatified in 1997.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
