The story

Francisco Gárate was born in 1857 near the castle of Loyola in the Basque Country, birthplace of St Ignatius. He became a Jesuit brother, a member of the order who is not a priest.

For forty-two years he was the doorkeeper at the University of Deusto in Bilbao. Students, teachers, workers and visitors passed his desk every day, and all of them remembered his kindness; they called him "Brother Kindness". He said: "I calmly do what I can, and the Lord, who can do everything, does the rest." He died in 1929 and was beatified in 1985.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Francisco Gárate Aranguren was beatified in 1985.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
