The story

Giuseppe Giaccardo was born in 1896 in Narzole, in Piedmont, Italy. As a boy he made his first confession to a young priest, Giacomo Alberione. In 1917 he joined Alberione's new Society of St Paul, which spreads the Gospel through printing and other media, and took the name Timoteo.

He was the first priest ordained for the Society, in 1919. For almost thirty years he was Alberione's deputy, helping the Paulines grow in Alba and Rome. People remembered his humility. He died in Rome in 1948. John Paul II beatified him in 1989.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Giuseppe Giaccardo was beatified in 1989.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
