During the German occupation of northern Italy he helped Jewish people and members of the Resistance escape. In 1944 he was betrayed, arrested and sent to the Dachau concentration camp, where he died on April 1, 1945. His fellow prisoners wrote "St. Giuseppe Girotti" on his bunk. He was beatified in Alba in 2014; Israel's Yad Vashem has also honoured him as Righteous Among the Nations.
