The story

Giuseppe Toniolo, who lived in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was an Italian economist and sociologist, a university professor, and a husband and father of seven children.

He worked to put into practice Pope Leo XIII's letter Rerum Novarum, the first major papal teaching on workers' rights and fair wages. He promoted Catholic Action, the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and the Italian Catholic Social Weeks. He wrote that, above the interests of any single nation, there is a "duty of human solidarity". He was beatified in Rome in 2012.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Giuseppe Toniolo was beatified in 2012.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
