Humbeline was born around 1092, a younger sister of St Bernard of Clairvaux. She married Guy de Marcy, a nobleman of Lorraine, and lived in wealth and luxury.
When she visited Bernard at Clairvaux in fine clothes and with a large escort, he refused to see her unless she changed her way of life. She took his warning to heart. Some years later, with her husband's consent, she entered the monastery at Jully-les-Nonnains.
She died around 1136 in the arms of her brothers Bernard, Andrew and Nivard.
Humbeline is honoured as Blessed by long-standing Cistercian tradition; her cult was recognised in 1703.
