The story

Louis Brisson was born in 1817 at Plancy in the Aube, France, and was ordained a priest for the diocese of Troyes in 1840. He taught religion and science, and he was also an inventor; he built an astronomical clock.

As chaplain to the Visitation nuns of Troyes, he met the superior, Mother Marie de Sales Chappuis. For years she urged him to spread the spirit of St Francis de Sales, and he resisted at first. In the end he founded the Oblate Sisters of St Francis de Sales and the Oblates of St Francis de Sales. He also opened homes for young women factory workers.

He died in 1908 and was beatified in Troyes in 2012.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Louis Brisson was beatified in 2012.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
