The story

Luigi Caburlotto was born in Venice in 1817 into a poor family of gondoliers. He studied in the schools of the Cavanis brothers and was ordained a priest in 1842.

He served in San Giacomo dall'Orio, one of the poorest parishes in Venice, and became its parish priest in 1849. He believed education was the best way to lift people out of poverty. He opened schools and homes, especially for poor and abandoned girls, and founded the Daughters of St Joseph to carry on this work.

He died in Venice in 1897 and was beatified in St Mark's Square in 2015.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Luigi Caburlotto was beatified in 2014.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
