At nineteen she moved to Malta. At twenty-two she entered the Benedictine monastery of St Peter in Mdina, the old walled town at the island's centre, and took the name Maria Adeodata. Over twenty-five years she did almost every job in the house, from sacristan and nurse to doorkeeper. She later served as abbess. She died in the monastery in 1855. John Paul II beatified her in Malta in 2001.
