The story

Teresina Mainetti was born in 1939 at Colico, near Lake Como, the tenth child of her family; her mother died giving birth to her. During a confession a priest urged her to "do something beautiful for others" with her life, and she took the advice to heart.

She joined the Daughters of the Cross, taking the name Sister Maria Laura in 1959. She taught in Vasto, Rome, Parma and finally Chiavenna in the Alps, where she became superior of the community. Her work was chiefly with children, young people and anyone who needed care.

On June 6, 2000, three girls killed her in Chiavenna, intending it as a satanic act. She died praying and forgiving them. She was beatified in Chiavenna in 2021.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Maria Laura Mainetti was beatified in 2021.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
