The story

Therese von Wüllenweber was born in 1833 at Myllendonk castle near Mönchengladbach, Germany, the eldest daughter of a baron. She was educated by the Benedictine nuns in Liège and later helped her father run the family estate.

Retreats with the Jesuits gave her a great love for the missions. Against her father's wishes she entered the Sacred Heart convent at Blumenthal at twenty-four.

In 1888 she founded, with Father Francis Jordan, the Sisters of the Divine Saviour (Salvatorian Sisters) at Tivoli, and she took the name Mary of the Apostles. She died in Rome on Christmas night 1907. Paul VI beatified her in 1968.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Maria Therese von Wüllenweber was beatified in 1968.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
