Bl. Mercè Prat i Prat

Mercè Prat was born in Barcelona in 1880. In 1904 she joined the Society of St Teresa of Jesus, a teaching congregation, and spent her life teaching girls and young women.

In July 1936, at the start of the Spanish Civil War, religious communities in Barcelona were attacked and forced to scatter. She was arrested because she was a nun and shot on July 24, 1936, forgiving the men who killed her. John Paul II beatified her in 1990.

Mercè Prat i Prat was beatified in 1990.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
