The story

Raymond du Puy was the son of Hugues du Puy, a commander in the First Crusade. In 1120 he succeeded Blessed Gerard as the second Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller, the order later known as the Knights of Malta.

He organised the order into religious brothers, military brothers and associates, and turned it into a military power as well as a hospital order. He made the eight-pointed cross of Amalfi its official emblem; it later became known as the Maltese Cross. He founded the Hospitallers' first infirmary by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and he was present at the capture of Ascalon in 1153.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Raymond is called Blessed by long tradition in the Order of Malta. We have not found a formal papal confirmation of his cult.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
