The story

Salvi Huix Miralpeix was born in 1877 in the province of Girona, Catalonia, and was ordained a priest in 1903. He joined the Oratory of St Philip Neri at Vic and for twenty years preached, taught and wrote.

In 1927 he became Bishop of Ibiza, and in 1935 Bishop of Lleida. When the Spanish Civil War broke out in July 1936, a mob attacked his residence. He hid with a family, but on July 23 he left to avoid endangering them and gave himself up.

In prison he encouraged his fellow prisoners. On August 5, 1936, the prisoners were driven to the cemetery to be shot. He gave them absolution before they were killed. He was beatified in 2013 among 522 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Salvi Huix Miralpéix was beatified in 2013.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
