The story

Yusuf Nehmé was born in 1889 in Lehfed, Lebanon, to a Maronite family; the Maronites are an Eastern Catholic Church centred in Lebanon. At sixteen he joined the Lebanese Maronite Order as a lay brother, taking the name Estephan (Stephen).

He worked all his life as a carpenter, builder and farm worker in the order's monasteries. He was known for treating labourers fairly, making peace, and doing everything in God's presence; he often said "God sees me." He died in 1938 after a day's work in the fields, and was beatified in 2010.

Blessed, not yet a saint

Stephen Nehmé was beatified in 2010.

Beatification allows public veneration, usually in a particular region or religious family. Canonization extends it to the whole Church.
