Their story
Butler presents this story as a modern legend. According to it, the brothers Maximus and Venerandus came from Brescia, were sent by Pope Damasus to preach in Gaul, and were martyred at Acquiney near Evreux. Their companions were Mark and Etherius.
Butler says no authentic records fix the date of their death. Their relics were found at Acquiney about 960. Baring-Gould gives about 512.
