Early life

The book says little or nothing about early life. This is how the account begins.

Thin entry · the 1897 book gives only 65 words. We have not filled the gap with invented detail.

This memoir is not happy in its chronology. The date of Clovis is 482 — 510. Sigebert, bishop of Mainz, appears on the register in the Mainz cathedral library immediately before Gerold, who was killed in 743, the predecessor of Gewilieb, whom S. Boniface deposed in 745.

Baring-Gould’s sources: German, Gallican, and Benedictine Martyrologies. Authority: — A short Life in the Mainz Breviary.] Bilhild was born at Hochheim, on the Main, not far above where that river enters the Rhine, in the reign of Clovis. Her father's name was Eberim, and her mother's Mechtrude. The family was noble. She was married to a man of birth and position, who fell in battle, leaving her with one child, which died soon after its father. Then, having nothing to live for, she went to her uncle Sigebert, bishop of Mainz, who gave her the veil, and she built and endowed a large monastery for women in that city.

This memoir is not happy in its chronology. The date of Clovis is 482 — 510. Sigebert, bishop of Mainz, appears on the register in the Mainz cathedral library immediately before Gerold, who was killed in 743, the predecessor of Gewilieb, whom S. Boniface [English missionary to Germany, martyred 754] deposed in 745. Consequently the date of Sigebert will be about 716, and this must fix the date of S. Bilhild.
