Their story
(The surviving account on this page begins partway through the story.)
Eleutherius, chamberlain to the emperor Maximian, asked leave to visit his country estate, was baptized there, and secretly built an underground church reached through a well. On his return he told Maximian the country air was healthy and a relief from the city's smoke and dust. Maximian laughed and said he too would like long country holidays.
A servant hoping for favour told the emperor that his master worshipped the Crucified. "What is that?" Maximian asked of the well. "An old dry well, Sire." Maximian visited the villa, spotted the covered well, and had a man lowered; he found a chapel with an altar and burning lamps. The emperor had Eleutherius beheaded. Later, when Constantine had defeated Licinius (emperor in the East 308–324, who turned against Christians before Constantine defeated him), Christians built a church over his body.
