Their story
(The surviving account on this page begins partway through the story.)
A young man named Hardwin wanted to marry Maxellend and planned to carry her off by force. He came to her home with followers; she hid in a chest and begged her nurse not to tell.
Hardwin broke in, searched the house, and dragged her from the chest. She fought him off so fiercely that, in a rage, he struck and killed her, and his men fled. She was buried at Caudry, and St. Vindician, bishop of Cambrai, later moved her relics, which are still shown at Caudry.
