Their story
Plechelm was a noble English Saxon, born in what is now southern Scotland, which then belonged to Northumbria. After ordination he went on pilgrimage to Rome. Later, with Bishop St Wiro and the deacon St Otger, he went as a missionary to the still-pagan parts of the Low Countries. Under the protection of Pepin, mayor of the palace, he converted Guelderland and the neighbouring lands between the Rhine, the Wahal and the Meuse.
He then lived on St Peter's Mount near Ruremund and kept going out on missions. His life says that every year at the start of Lent Pepin laid aside his robes, came barefoot to the mount, confessed to him, and asked his advice on ruling according to God's law. Plechelm died on 15 July 732, and his relics were later kept at Oldenzel and Ruremund.
