Their story
(The surviving account on this page begins partway through the story.)
Theodard was a cheerful bishop, ready to weep with those who suffered. He also looked after the temporal affairs of his diocese. Finding that powerful men had seized church lands, he hesitated, then decided that as a steward answerable to his successors he must act, and set out to ask King Sigebert to restore them.
In the forest of Bienwald, by the Rhine, robbers attacked his party. His wordy biographer has them answer his speech with a line of Horace about death coming to all, before an axe killed him. St. Lambert moved his body to Liège.
