Surrender Novena

The Surrender Novena

The Surrender Novena is nine short meditations, written as if Jesus were speaking, all ending with one line: 'O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything!' People find it when they are tired of trying to control everything.

The story

The novena comes from Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo (1882–1970), a priest of Naples. He is a Servant of God, meaning his cause for sainthood has been opened, but he has not been declared a saint. His original text is still under copyright, so we do not reprint it here. We give the refrain and a summary of each day in our own words.

Three things you might not know

Fr. Dolindo is a Servant of God, not a canonized saint.

The refrain is repeated ten times at the end of each day.

Day by day it moves from worry to trust: stop worrying, close your eyes, let Jesus act, and pray instead of fretting.

The novena

Nine days · one intention

A novena is nine days of prayer for one intention, modeled on the nine days the apostles and Mary prayed between the Ascension and Pentecost (Acts 1–2). Pray this each day:

O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything!
