Their story
Hugo de Villa, a noble and gifted dean of the church of Cambrai, entered the strict abbey of Vaucelles early in the 13th century, partly to avoid being made a bishop. Many asked him for his fine tame falcon, but he kept his plan secret.
At the abbey gate he cut its string and set it free: "Fly away and enjoy thy liberty." His biographer Thomas de Cantinpré says birds would perch on his hands as a novice. When the novice master objected, Hugo shooed them away, saying they should obey him, not he them. He had been as noted for his noble birth and talents as for his virtue.
