Their story
Wulfhad and Rufin were sons of Wulfere, king of Mercia, and his queen Emmelinda. They were baptised by St. Chad. Butler says they were killed at their prayers on their father's order, because for political reasons he then favoured idolatry. He later did remarkable penance for the crime.
Their mother Emmelinda buried them at Stone. The place took its name from the heap of stones raised over their tomb, and she later used the stones to build a church on the spot. Butler gives about 670; Baring-Gould, the text on this page, gives about 658. The sources differ.
