Early life

The book says little or nothing about early life. This is how the account begins.

Thin entry · the 1914 book gives only 49 words. We have not filled the gap with invented detail.

These martyrs suffered under Diocletian, in Cilicia. S. Zosimus was a hermit. His ears were burnt off with red hot irons, afterwards he was plunged into a vessel of molten lead, and was then dismissed.

Drawn from themes in the original account

Share your faith, in words and by example. Preaching and conversion are central here.

Make time for silence. Solitude and withdrawal to pray shape this life.

Learn from the kind of life it was. A whole community that stayed faithful to Christ when it cost everything.

Baring-Gould’s sources: Roman Martyrology and Greek Menæa. The Greeks keep their commemoration, however, on Jan. 4th. The authority for the following account is the Greek Menæa.

These martyrs suffered under Diocletian [Roman emperor 284–305, who began the ‘Great Persecution’ of Christians in 303], in Cilicia. S. Zosimus was a hermit. His ears were burnt off with red hot irons, afterwards he was plunged into a vessel of molten lead, and was then dismissed. He returned to his desert, converted and baptized Athanasius, and died in his cell.
