Their story
Gaudentius was trained by St Philastrius, Bishop of Brescia. To escape praise he went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and at Caesarea in Cappadocia the sisters and nieces of St Basil gave him relics of the Forty Martyrs.
While he was away Philastrius died, and the people of Brescia swore to have no other bishop. Gaudentius gave way only when threatened with excommunication, and St Ambrose ordained him about 387.
At the request of the nobleman Benevolus, who was too ill to attend, he wrote down his sermons, and seventeen of them survive. He built a new church at Brescia and placed in it relics of the Forty Martyrs, St John the Baptist, St Andrew, St Thomas, St Luke and others.
