Their story
Adapted in modern English from Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints · Baring-Gould original below · little is known
According to St. Gregory of Tours, Paul was sent from Rome to Gaul with Saturninus, Dionysius, Trophimus, Martial and Gatian. He preached at Narbonne and died in peace. The poet Prudentius wrote that Paul made Narbonne illustrious. Baring-Gould places him in the third or fourth century.
Early life
The book says little or nothing about early life. This is how the account begins.
Thin entry · the 1897 book gives only 126 words. We have not filled the gap with invented detail.
Saint Paul, mentioned by the early martyrologies as bishop of Narbonne, and confessor, has been conjectured to be Sergius Paulus, the proconsul, converted in the island of Cyprus by the apostle Paul, when Elymas, the sorcerer, withstood S. Paul. There is no evidence substantiating this, nor does it appear to rest on any very ancient tradition. The most ancient martyrologies do not assert it, though some of them say that he was a convert of the Apostle of the Gentiles.
