Their story
Pope Martin sent Landoald, a Roman priest, to help St. Amandus in the Low Countries, along with the deacon Amantius. St. Remacle kept Landoald to work in the diocese of Maestricht. A rich man, Aper, gave him land at Wintershoven, where he built a church of St. Peter in 659.
His disciple Adrian was murdered by robbers while returning from collecting alms. Landoald died soon after, probably before 668. His body was moved to Maestricht in 735, hidden from the Normans, and finally, with those of Amantius and Adrian, translated to Ghent in 980.
Amandus had resigned the see of Maestricht to St. Remacle to return to mission work. Landoald came of a Lombard family. The diocese was only partly converted, and he worked on under St. Theodard, sending members of his small community to Maestricht to beg. Euraculus, bishop of Liége, raised the bodies, and the monks of S. Bavo, owners of Wintershoven, claimed them.
