The story

The Dormition of Mary was kept in the East by the 6th century, and Rome kept August 15 by the 7th. Pius XII defined the Assumption as dogma on November 1, 1950. This page uses the Salve Regina, the Hail Holy Queen, in its traditional English for each day.

Three things you might not know

The Salve Regina dates from the 11th century and is often credited to Hermann of Reichenau.

August 15 is a holy day of obligation in the United States.

Titian's Assumption, shown here, hangs over the high altar of the Frari in Venice.

The novena

Nine days · one intention

A novena is nine days of prayer for one intention, modeled on the nine days the apostles and Mary prayed between the Ascension and Pentecost (Acts 1–2). Pray this each day:

Day 1. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Day 2.

Day 3. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Day 8. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope!
